Tree Planting, Wildlife Conservation Necessary To Combat Climate Change -Activist

An environmental activist has called for an end to poaching and indiscriminate cutting of trees in Africa as a panacea to climate change.

Majekodunmi, the founder of Lufasi Nature Park, made the remarks recently at the 2024 edition of ‘Fela Debates’ in Lagos.

The event, part of the annual ‘Felabration’ music festival, focused on the theme “The geopolitics of Africa and climate change”.

Majekodunmi said the illegal practices of poaching and tree felling must end to prevent further environmental damage caused by climate change.

He advised Africans to plant more trees and conserve the continent’s wildlife.

“As Africans, we should stop ripping off our life support systems,” he said.

He recalled how Nigeria was once the largest producer of crops such as cassava, palm kernel, cocoa, and groundnut, but had lost its lead due to a “focus on profits”.

“How is it possible that the most intellectual creatures to ever walk on the surface of the earth are destroying their own home?” he asked.

Majekodunmi also urged the government to address the issue of flooding and focus on improving erosion control efforts.
