Akpabio Dismisses Impeachment Plot Rumors, Says Senate United

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, refuted reports of an impeachment plot against him, asserting that the Senate remains unified. 

Akpabio addressed the matter during plenary following rumors that Department of State Services (DSS) personnel had been deployed to the National Assembly Complex to thwart an alleged plan to oust him.

Speculation suggested that disgruntled Northern Senators, allegedly unhappy with President Bola Tinubu, were reviving efforts to remove Akpabio from his position.

However, Akpabio urged the public to disregard these rumors, stating that Senate proceedings were ongoing peacefully without disruption.

“We are here, sitting down and doing our work, very peacefully, oblivious of the mischief going on behind us,” Akpabio said, dismissing the reports as baseless.

He referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Special Duties for investigation, directing them to report back within 24 hours. 

Akpabio attributed the rumors to attempts by media outlets to drive traffic through sensationalist reporting, accusing them of spreading fake news.

“The chamber is very stable, and the issue of impeachment does not come in,” he reassured, emphasizing that the Senate remained focused on its duties.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Kaka Shehu, confirmed that his committee would investigate the claims and report their findings to the Senate promptly.

This is the second time Akpabio has faced impeachment rumors. Earlier reports surfaced shortly after the Senate’s inauguration.
