Senate to Screen Acting CJN Kekere-Ekun Today

The process follows a letter from President Bola Tinubu, received by the Red Chamber on Tuesday, requesting her confirmation. During the plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio presented the President’s request to the assembly.

Justice Kekere-Ekun has been in the role of acting CJN since August, succeeding Justice Olukayode Ariwoola upon his retirement. In his letter, Tinubu highlighted Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint the Chief Justice based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council, pending Senate approval.

In his correspondence, Tinubu stated, “I hereby forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. I trust that this request will receive the Senate’s prompt consideration and approval.” The nomination has been referred to the Committee of the Whole for deliberation today.

Should she be confirmed, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second woman to hold this prestigious position in the country’s judicial history.
