“Why I left Super Eagles” – Peseiro Reveals

Jose Peseiro, the former head coach of the Nigerian national team, has revealed the real reasons behind his departure from the role.

Peseiro, who guided Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they finished as runners-up, decided to step down after his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ended.

Despite efforts by the NFF and Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh, to keep him on board, Peseiro’s salary demands reportedly exceeded the federation’s budget.

In an interview with SABC, Peseiro cited the intense pressure and stress of managing the national team as significant factors in his decision to leave. “There was too much stress,” Peseiro said.

“Although I had the full support of my staff and players, it wasn’t enough. I wanted to win the AFCON for the fans, the government, and everyone involved. But even before the tournament, I had already decided to leave. Winning the trophy wouldn’t have changed my decision.”

Following Peseiro’s departure, Finidi George briefly took over but resigned after less than two months, citing insufficient support from the NFF.

Since then, the Super Eagles have been without a permanent head coach, with NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen serving as interim manager. Under Eguavoen, the team secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Benin in Uyo and earned a draw against Rwanda in Kigali.
