The Real Story: FG Gives Root Cause Of Borno Flood

The Federal Government has debunked reports that the recent flooding in Maiduguri was caused by a dam collapse in the state.

Recall that on Tuesday, 10, 2024, over 40 thousand people died and 1 million were displaced as a result of flooding in Maiduguri.

However, the Federal Government has attributed the recent flood disaster to the overflow of the Ngadda River.

“Due to climate change, the downpour this year was unprecedented,” Minister Utsev explained. “The rivers were unable to handle the excessive water, leading to the dam’s overflow. It was not a dam failure but rather a breach in the dyke.”

The minister noted that the flood primarily affected Maiduguri and Jere areas of Borno State due to the overflow from Alau Dam, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city center. The Ngadda River, a major tributary of the Yedzaram, contributed significantly to the influx of water.
