According to a report from the Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1 party executive committee, Senator Dino Melaye has been suspended from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for conduct deemed to have violated party rules.
The Matrix gathered that the suspension was contained in a letter dated September 12, 2024; signed by Ward Chairman Abayomi Osamika and Ward Secretary Yodson Dayo.
The letter stated that Melaye’s actions had caused significant embarrassment to the party.
“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable,” the letter read.
The letter clarified that the suspension is effective immediately, by Article 59(1) of the PDP Constitution.
This article grants ward executives the authority to discipline members whose actions could damage the party’s reputation or interests.
The PDP Ward Exco noted that Melaye had been summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee on August 20, 2024, to respond to allegations of misconduct.
However, the senator failed to attend, an absence described as a “gross disrespect” to the party’s leadership. “Senator Dino Melaye’s failure to appear before the Disciplinary Committee constitutes a gross disrespect to the party and its leadership,” the statement continued.
The disciplinary committee had been formed to examine claims that Melaye’s behavior was detrimental to the PDP’s unity and electoral prospects.
The Ward Exco asserted that Melaye’s refusal to appear violated Article 57(4) of the party’s constitution, which obligates members to respond to such summonses.
The ward’s executive committee emphasized the importance of loyalty and discipline within the PDP, urging all members to adhere to these values.
“We urge all members of our great party to remain committed to the principles of party discipline and loyalty. We must work together to build a strong and united party capable of winning elections and serving the interests of our people,” the committee stated.
However, at the time of this report, Melaye has not yet issued an official response to his suspension.
Also, the national leadership of the PDP has yet to comment on the suspension, but the decision is likely to spark further discussions about party discipline and the handling of dissent within Nigeria’s political landscape.
As of now, the PDP maintains that “the suspension is in line with the provisions of Article 59(1) of the PDP Constitution, which empowers the Ward Party Exco to take disciplinary actions against erring members,” according to the Ward Exco.
