Kenneth Okonkwo Urges Tinubu, Atiku, Obi To Step Down For New Leaders

Former Labour Party spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has called for new faces in Nigerian politics, urging President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi to step aside.

Okonkwo, speaking on Arise News TV, argued that the current politicians have failed to address the country’s socioeconomic issues and that fresh ideas are needed.

He emphasized the importance of opposition parties consolidating and forming alliances before considering electoral mergers.

He said, “I completely agree with you that we need new faces, 100% and that is how I have said it, that Atiku, Peter Obi, and Tinubu should step aside. The reason is because the ruling party has failed, the opposition has failed. Are you aware that we have more opposition members as representatives than the ruling party? If they have come together, that is why I said coming together to form a consolidated fortune, before you even think to talk about merger.

“I am not saying merger is not important, I am saying don’t just finish an election and the next thing you start talking about is the next election. You consolidate and form an alliance to work together as an opposition.”

Okonkwo’s comments come as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) revealed plans for a merger between opposition parties, including the PDP, Labour Party, and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general polls.

The PDP spokesman mentioned the three opposition candidates in the last elections; PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), saying they would put personal interests aside.
