The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that a total of 1,284 suspects have been arrested in various operations across the country over the past six weeks.
The breakdown includes 307 armed robbery suspects, 296 kidnapping suspects, 176 rape and defilement suspects, 301 homicide suspects, and 204 suspected cultists.
The Police Force’s PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this known on Friday while parading some suspects arrested for various offences.
Among those paraded were three suspects who broke into a police officer’s residence to steal gold.
The statement reads; “In the last six weeks, the Nigerian police force has arrested 307 armed robbery suspects, 296 kidnapping suspects, 301 homicide suspects, 176 rape through defilement suspects, 204 suspected courtesans and we’ve been able to recover 284 firearms, 6,702 ammunition of various calibres and 107 vehicles and we were able to rescue 97 victims of kidnapping.”
Adejobi, disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has established a money laundering unit to combat the crime in the country.
He said, “ Furthermore, with the zeal of the inspector general of police and the present leadership of the Nigerian police force to support the government in the fight against money laundering, the IGP has recently established the anti-money laundering unit at the force headquarters here in Naboja, headed by C.P. Edoze Azuka, to leverage the already existing working relationship between the police and other anti-graft agencies.

“Also, in line with Interpol’s mandate to curb terrorism financing and international crimes amongst its member states, the IGP has carefully selected trained financial and cybercrime experts to dominate the unit for efficiency and effectiveness.”
He said, “Today, we will be presenting a total number of 35 suspects apprehended for various offences.
“One AK-47 rifle with magazine, sledgehammer, car jack, two chisels, small hammers and one Toyota i8 bus. Similarly, operations to mop up illegal arms and ammunition in circulation in the country led to the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, five magazines and 107 rounds of live ammunition of various calibres during this operation. Led by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of IRT, the IRT operatives were able to recover this. “
Adejobi said, “Following a trail of clues and extensive investigation, operatives of IRT arrested three suspects, namely Yusheu Umaru, 33 years, Awalu Lawal, male, 29 years, and Absalom Sheu.
“Subsequent interrogation revealed that the first suspect, Yusheu Umaru, is a fish trader at the Kado fish market who has been a resident of Abuja for 15 years. He had gone to Lube with one other male who is currently at large to rob houses.
“The duo had infiltrated several houses in the vicinity before making their way into the fourth target’s house after scaling the fence and then using a car jack to expand the bars of the back window.
