FG To Establish Mobile Court For Sexual Harassment Cases

The federal government is considering the establishment of mobile courts to handle cases of sexual harassment. This was revealed by the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, during a one-day National Stakeholder’s Engagement on Sexual Harassment Prevention in Abuja.

According to the Minister, “sexual harassment is not limited to tertiary institutions but also occurs in primary and secondary schools, involving teachers and even pupils.

Efforts are being made in collaboration with hotel owners to prevent under-aged children from lodging in hotels, and any such attempts will be reported to security operatives to address the issue of sexual harassment.”she said.

During the engagement, the Chairman of the ICPC, Musa Aliyu, expressed concern that without severe consequences for offenders, the problem of sexual harassment will persist and worsen.

Recalled that the ICPC previously executed a project, supported by the Ford Foundation, aimed at addressing sexual harassment and other forms of corruption.

The ICPC has also collaborated with commissioners of the 36 states in Nigeria with the aim of developing an model anti-sexual harassment policies for various levels of educational institutions.
