Senate to Call National Summit Regarding FarAmers’ and Herders’ Conflict

The Senate has passed a resolution that would direct the upper house in passing the required laws on the subject. The resolution calls for organizing a national conference with farmers and stakeholders to discuss the conflict between farmers and herders about grazing.

This resolution was adopted in response to a motion on the necessity of rehabilitation for four communities in Kogi State’s Omala LGA that had been the target of gunman assaults and killings, sponsored by Senator Isah Jibrin under orders 41 and 51.

Senator Jibrin further revealed that attacks on these communities—Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and Bagana—have caused wanton devastation of public and private properties valued at hundreds of millions of naira, in addition to the deaths of over 500 individuals.

During an emotive debate, some lawmakers clamoured outrightly for a law banning open grazing while others expressed displeasure over the military’s heavy reliance on some state governors for funds in order to operate.

The upper chamber subsequently adopted an additional prayer by Sen. Adams Oshiomhole for the set up of an adhoc committee, to facilitate the summit to discuss the critical challenges and halt prevailing clashes that has become a national menace
