Showdown Looms As Organised Labour Rejects FG’s N48k Minimum Wage Offer, Pulls Out Of Negotiation

A showdown is looming between the Federal Government and organized labour after the latter rejected the former’s offer of N48,000 as new minimum wage.

Organized labour comprising Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and others on Wednesday rejected the Federal Government’s offer and consequently pulled out of the ongoing minimum wage negotiations with the Federal Government.

It would be recalled that the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage resumed negotiations on Wednesday where the offer of N48k as new minimum wage was tabled before labour.

Representatives of the organized labour were left fuming by the government’s offer and reportedly stormed out of the meeting.

Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, who is one of the representatives of the NLC disclosed that, “we asked whether the N45,000 is for transport, food, clothing, housing or for what.

“So we just told them that since they are not serious, we better just leave, so we stormed out of the place.”

He said that the government offer was presented to them by the Permanent Secretary, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Office.
