The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted allegations of disobeying a court order regarding former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. Amidst debates surrounding the EFCC’s adherence to a court directive regarding Bello’s failed apprehension, the anti-graft agency responded through a press release signed by Wilson Uwujaren, its acting Director of Public Affairs.
Uwujaren clarified that while Bello sought refuge under a fundamental rights enforcement action with an order granted by Justice Isa Abdulallahi of the Kogi State High Court, this order did not invalidate a separate order from the Federal High Court for Bello’s arrest in preparation for his arraignment. He emphasized that the Kogi State High Court’s order merely aimed to enforce Bello’s rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement, without impeding the Federal High Court’s authority to rule on the case.

“The order issued by the Federal High Court for the arrest of Mr. Yahaya Bello, intended for his arraignment, does not conflict with the order of the Kogi State High Court,” Uwujaren stated. He highlighted the distinct nature of the cases, with the Federal High Court handling criminal charges unrelated to the fundamental rights enforcement action under appeal.
Furthermore, Uwujaren emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to prosecuting politically exposed individuals and pledged to continue fulfilling its mandate for the nation’s welfare. He urged Bello to surrender himself and address the charges leveled against him by the commission.
