Erudite Director of Womenhood College of Health Science and Technology in Kaduna State, North-West, Nigeria, Mallam Nurudden Bello, highlights the importance of teaching students about practical strategies to address climate change and environmental degradation through awareness-raising.
He tells how happy he is when the Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change visited the school and raised awareness of the issue among hundreds of children.
He asserts that the survival of humans, animals, and other living things is threatened by climate change.
These sentiments were echoed during the Awareness Week at the school, where the Department of Environmental Science and Dentistry invited the Kaduna State Government’s Special Assistant on Climate Change, Honorable Yusuf Idris Amoke.
Nurudden Bello points out that the entire country is experiencing extreme heat due to climate change, emphasizing the need to engage students in learning various ways to protect their environment and ecosystem.
Global Warming Education
In response, Honourable Yusuf Idris Amoke stresses the importance of educating students on issues related to global warming and methods to mitigate environmental degradation.
While highlighting the significant role climate education plays in raising awareness among students about coexisting with plants and animals in their environment.
He further advocates for the presence of trees in all schools to combat erosion and other forms of environmental degradation, while calls for the establishment of ‘Green Clubs’ in all schools across the 23 local government areas of the state.
Yusuf Amoke added that geography studies empower students in learning various way to protect their environment, asserting that geography teaching is at its best when it equips young people with skills for an increasingly globalized economy.
He then suggests on “ways to spread awareness on climate change in the country, including sharing news on social media, citing scientific research and evidence, providing real-life examples, discussing global solutions to the problem, and encouraging personal actions to fight climate change.”
