Senate Chief Whip Ali Ndume on Friday opened up a can of worms of the administration of the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Ndume is the Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District while appearing on Channels Television Politics Today programme monitored by The Matrix flayed ex-President Buhari for not being in charge of his government.
It would be recalled that the wife of the former President, Aisha Buhari had at a time raised an alarm that a cabal has hijacked her husband, whom she said now does things according to the whims and caprices of the cabal.
The president also admitted to this late last month when he disclosed that a cabal must have hijacked his government.
Reacting to this, Ndume expressed confidence that unlike Buhari, Tinubu is in charge of his administration.
“I believe in President Tinubu, I think he can change things. The President here is in charge, that’s one thing with him.
“Sometimes people even think Tinubu is too authoritative. No, he takes charge; unlike our former President who will just give you an assignment and will not look over you. That’s where the problem is, and he knows that. That was the mistake President Buhari did.”
Ndume added that Buhari later agreed with his claim that his administration was full of those he called kleptocrats.
“He (Buhari) ended up confessing these days that he had more kleptocrats in his government. I said it before, and now he admitted it that there were some kinds of people that took over power to themselves. But in Tinubu’s government, you can’t do that,” the senator submitted.
During the period of Buhari’s eight years, especially in his second tenure, most Nigerians shared the opinion that he was never there.
He also used the occasion to defend the rendition of President Bola Tinubu’s campaign tune at the hallowed chamber of the National Assembly during the presentation of the 2024 budget.
At the event earlier in the week, the lawmakers stood up as a symbol of respect, but the band was heard playing Tinubu’s campaign song from when he was a presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While the lawmakers have come under criticism, Ndume who represents Borno South, feels there is nothing wrong with the action. He argued that under the era of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the ‘Sai Baba’ mantra was also recited by the lawmakers.
“It is not a crime. Honestly, it is not a big deal. In this country, we pick on trivial things,” he said on the programme.
“When a President walks in, there are times that some members take advantage of that situation to even challenge the President directly.
“When Buhari came some time back, this same thing was done – ‘Sai Baba’ (was chanted). So why should Tinubu’s case be a big deal?”
