CEO of Sony Ventures, Gen Tsuchikawahas confirmed that the due diligence process has already begun for potential beneficiaries.
The company is particularly interested in the vibrant creative and entrepreneurial community in Africa, aiming to enhance entertainment experiences for audiences. Sony sees Africa as a key area of focus, and its interest in Nigeria is driven by the country’s large and youthful population, dynamic entertainment sector, and growing tech ecosystem. Nigeria already has a roster of successful startups in the entertainment space, including iROKOtv, Boomplay, and Stripe.
The investment initiative will be managed through the newly established Sony Innovation Fund: Africa, which falls under the umbrella of Sony Ventures Corporation. This fund will specifically target startups in the gaming, music, film, and content distribution sectors.
This investment is significant for Africa’s entertainment tech startups, which have faced challenges in securing consistent venture capital. Despite the potential in gaming, music, movies, and content distribution, these startups received only $42 million in 2022, making up just 0.9% of Africa’s total venture capital investments, as reported by Partech Africa.
Sony has not provided specific details about the timeline for deploying investments or the number of beneficiaries, but the company is committed to initiating the due diligence process for potential recipients in the near future.
Sony’s move into African entertainment startups aligns with the growing interest in Africa’s tech and entertainment industries. Other global tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook have also recently invested in African startups. This influx of investment could have a positive impact on Nigeria’s entertainment industry and stimulate further interest from investors.
