Since I Left, Eagles Haven’t Qualified — Dalung Defends Tenure

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, says Nigeria’s continued absence from the FIFA World Cup since his exit from office reflects the strength of his tenure.

Speaking in an interview with Trust TV published on Wednesday, Dalung argued that the Super Eagles’ last qualification in 2018 was achieved largely under his leadership.

“I left records nobody has beaten. Since I left, Nigeria has not qualified for the World Cup,” he said.

He noted that the 2018 ticket was secured without the expensive task forces and heavy budgets previously used.

“Before, you needed a presidential task force with N10 billion. I qualified Nigeria with a match to spare,” he said.

Dalung challenged critics who described his tenure as unsuccessful, asking them to explain the team’s struggles since his departure.

He also listed infrastructure projects completed under his watch, including the renovation of sports facilities at the Lagos National Stadium and the construction of three mini stadia in Daura, Makurdi and Kano.

Describing himself as the most successful sports minister, Dalung said he completed projects he initiated and dismissed claims of poor performance.

“So, if all these are woeful performance, I accept it,” he added sarcastically.
