Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has enumerated a number of socio – economic benefits that will accrue to the State following the recent conferment of international status on the Victor Attah International Airport, VAIA, by the Federal Government.
He stated this while interacting with Newsmen on his arrival at the airport from a strategic meeting with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Kayamo.
The Governor hinted that with the latest approval, the airport will commence full international flight operations latest by the first quarter of 2026.
“For this region, trade will be enhanced. Tourism will be boosted. Jobs will be created. The international airport will be busy. Flights will land directly here. There will be a whole lot of economic activities for the good of our people and our State.” he said.
Governor Eno further said that with the international status of the airport, “our airline, Ibom Air, stands favourably to expand its operations, and partner with other international airlines to choose here as part of their business routes in Nigeria.
“This is all what we have been trying to do – creating that aviation ecosystem. I don’t believe in talking too much but working behind the scene to achieve results.” He continued.
He revealed that the present achievement in the State’s aviation sector is one of the reasons the State needed to move to align with the centre in order to enhance collaboration and engagement for positive developmental strides of this nature to be attracted to the State.
“You know how long we have been pursuing this status for our airport. But, by the grace of God, all of this is coming together for our good.” He concluded.
Dignitaries who received The Governor at the airport include, The Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah; members of the State Executive Council; political Stalwarts, Captains of industries and other state government functionaries.
