Akpabio Swears Lalong In As Senator After Resigning Ministerial Position

The former minister of labor and employment, Simon Lalong, has taken the oath of office to serve as a senator for the Plateau South Senatorial District.

During the reconvened Senate session on Wednesday, he was sworn in. After serving as minister for around four months, Lalong offered his resignation, which was communicated in a letter that was sent to President Tinubu on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Recall that the Court of Appeal pronounced Lalong to be a legitimately elected senator representing the Plateau South Senatorial District following his ordination as a priest. The Certificate of Return was ordered to be issued to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the Court.

In his letter to the President, the Minister told the President that his decision to resign was not made lightly because of the trust and confidence that President Tinubu placed in him as a Minister in his cabinet, having served as the Director General of the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Council which delivered victory for the All Progressives Congress.

He, however, said it became expedient for him to proceed and take his seat at the Red Chambers to continue contributing to the President’s Renewed Hope agenda after extensive consultations.
