Qatar Bars Nigerian Men From Solo Travel, Tightens Visa Rules

Nigerian men travelling alone can no longer obtain tourist or transit visas to Qatar under new rules introduced by the Gulf nation’s Ministry of Interior.

The policy, which took effect on September 5, applies to both new and pending applications. Only women and families are now eligible for visas, while men must travel with family to qualify. Applicants are also required to book accommodation in five-star hotels and provide confirmed return transfers.

Qatar says the restrictions are aimed at curbing overstays, but the move has sparked concerns in Nigeria over its impact on business, family ties, and travel connections.

For many male travellers, particularly business executives, students, and those using Doha as a transit hub to Asia and Europe — the rules amount to a near travel ban.

Industry experts warn the policy could strain bilateral ties, noting that similar restrictions have triggered friction in the past.
