Bioplastics and the Future: Why Nigeria Must Act Now

Environmental pollution remains one of Nigeria’s greatest challenges, affecting public health, biodiversity, and food production. While oil spills, industrial waste, and deforestation often dominate the conversation, plastic pollution is a major contributor to all forms of pollution – land, air and water.

Improperly disposed plastics clog drainage systems causing seasonal flooding that serve as breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

They eventually fragment into microplastics that contaminate food and water, potentially causing neurotoxicity, hormonal disruption, and organ damage in humans and animals.

Despite these issues, plastics remain an integral part of modern living. Hence, global attention is shifting to biodegradable alternatives, bioplastics. These innovative materials break down naturally into harmless substances and are often made from renewable resources like starch and microorganisms.

Nigeria is uniquely positioned to lead in bioplastics development. As Africa’s largest producer of cassava, we have an abundant starch supply, ideal for producing materials like PLA (polylactic acid). PHA (polyhydroxy alkanoate) is another promising bioplastic, made using bacteria, sustained with starch- and sugar-based feedstocks.

Currently, I’m pursuing my doctoral research focused on polymer science and bioplastics processing at the University of Georgia. This posits me to see the vast potential Nigeria holds in transforming agricultural by-products into sustainable materials. However, bioplastics manufacturing is deeply interdisciplinary, requiring the collaboration of agricultural scientists, engineers, microbiologists, chemists, and business leaders.

Now is the time for Nigerian youths to harness their knowledge and creativity to build a more sustainable future.

Together, we can turn agricultural abundance into environmental innovation and reshape the plastics industry for good.
