JUST IN! Court Declares Ehie Edison as Speaker of Rivers Assembly

The rightful Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly is none other than Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison, according to a Federal High Court ruling in Port-Harcourt.

A restraining order was also obtained by the court to stop Hon. Martins Amaewhule, who is purportedly supported by Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory’s current minister, from continuing to assert his leadership of the assembly. Additionally, Dumle Maol was forbidden from parading as the Rivers State Assembly’s deputy speaker.

The court also issued a warning against using police personnel and thugs to forcefully enter the Assembly Complex.

This decision is made in the midst of a contentious political dispute between Governor Fubara and Governor Wike..

On Monday, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal divisions within the PDP. The defectors, led by Amaewhule, had previously initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara before the intervention of President Tinubu ultimately stalled the process.

Commentators believe the defection is primarily motivated by the lawmakers’ loyalty to Wike and his desire to maintain his political influence in Rivers State.

Recall that Wike has previously accused Governor Fubara of attempting to dismantle his political structure within the state.

However, during a recent meeting with traditional rulers, Governor Fubara said he would not “surrender our mandate and progress to intimidation, blackmail and deliberate sabotage”.
