NDLEA Intercepts N777m Worth Of Drugs, Arrests University Student In Edo

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 53,520.80kg of assorted illicit drugs worth over ₦777 million in the first half of 2025.

Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju revealed this during a media briefing in Benin to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

He disclosed the arrest of 28-year-old Esther Abumere, a 300-level student of Ambrose Alli University, who allegedly used a supermarket in Ekpoma as a front to sell narcotics.

Items recovered included Colorado, Canadian Loud, Tramadol, Swinol, Rohypnol, and Molly.

Abumere reportedly claimed she went into drug peddling to repay a microfinance loan.

The NDLEA also destroyed 18 cannabis farms, secured 24 convictions, and provided rehabilitation for 19 drug users.

Ofoyeju urged the public to assist the agency by reporting drug-related activities, linking drug abuse to rising insecurity like cultism and kidnapping.

“These enemies of the state can run but cannot hide. We will catch them, seize their drugs, trace their illicit wealth, and prosecute them,” he vowed.
