In a bold move aimed at fostering economic growth in Africa, Microsoft Corporation has announced its commitment to empower ten million small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by the year 2025. This initiative was unveiled by the President of Microsoft Africa, Lillian Barnard, during a press conference held in Lagos, Nigeria, where she also introduced a five-year strategic partnership between Microsoft and Flutterwave.
The overarching goal of this partnership is to equip SMEs with the essential tools, infrastructure, and scaling support they need to thrive, thereby facilitating their growth and encouraging strategic collaboration. Lillian Barnard emphasized that Microsoft is dedicated to fast-tracking economic growth across the African continent through the transformative power of technology, with a specific focus on granting SMEs access to the digital financial tools and services vital for their success.
Barnard said, “We believe greater access to technology and innovation holds the key to building thriving local businesses that will create stronger economies to enable a brighter future for all.” This approach recognizes the vital role that SMEs play in Africa’s development, as they are responsible for employing approximately 90 percent of the population and driving innovation to address societal challenges.
Notably, SMEs, particularly in Africa, face a critical challenge in the form of limited access to financial services and hurdles related to seamless transactions through local payment methods. As of now, around 90 percent of transactions on the continent are still conducted in cash, and a significant percentage of small businesses lack access to credit, hampering their growth and sustainability.
Ola Williams, the Country Manager of Microsoft Nigeria, highlighted the importance of digital financial inclusion for SMEs, stating, “To drive sustainable growth in Nigeria, small businesses need the ability to participate more actively in the local and even global marketplace. This begins with digital financial inclusion. If we want to build a more resilient country and ultimately a more prosperous continent, we must begin by giving these businesses the digital financial services they need, not just to survive, but to thrive.”
The strategic partnership between Microsoft and Flutterwave, a payment technology company, is poised to revolutionize payment innovation in Africa and offer robust support for the growth of small businesses across the continent. By addressing the existing gaps in access to financial services and streamlining transactions, this collaboration seeks to empower SMEs and enhance their contribution to Africa’s economic development.
In conclusion, Microsoft’s commitment to empowering ten million SMEs by 2025, coupled with its strategic partnership with Flutterwave, represents a significant step towards fostering economic growth and innovation in Africa. By providing SMEs with the necessary digital tools and financial services, this initiative aims to unlock their potential, enabling them to thrive and drive stronger economies throughout the continent.
