Abiola Won June 12, 1993 Election – IBB Finally Admits

In a groundbreaking revelation, former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has officially acknowledged that the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Babangida’s admission is detailed in his newly launched autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” which was unveiled in Abuja on Thursday.

Through the book’s reviewer, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Babangida affirmed that Abiola, who ran on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), met all electoral requirements, securing the majority of votes and nationwide spread necessary to become Nigeria’s president.

“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida admitted, marking a historic confession about the controversial annulment.

Describing the annulment as “the most challenging aspect of his life,” Babangida expressed relief that former President Muhammadu Buhari later recognized Abiola’s victory, posthumously awarding him the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Nigeria’s highest national honor for presidents.

This long-awaited acknowledgment adds a new layer to Nigeria’s political history, reigniting debates over one of the country’s most contentious elections.
