Legal Expert Urges Restraint in Tinubu Certificate Debate

In a statement that was issued today, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has made a call for an end to the ongoing media debate surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s alleged certificate forgery.

He did this in a Statement he titled “This Madness of Chicago State University Must Stop Now,” Agbakoba made a passionate plea to Nigerians on the need to cease fanning the embers of controversy and instead patiently awaits the Supreme Court to deliver her verdict on the presidential election appeals.

The cacophony of discordant voices on Tinubu/Atiku over the certificate matter is completely out of hand. This utter nonsense from armchair lawyers is heating up Nigeria dangerously.

Expressing his concerns, Agbakoba emphasized the growing cacophony of opposing voices on the Tinubu/Atiku certificate matter, characterizing it as perilously divisive. He urged individuals to withhold their opinions and judgments until the Supreme Court delivers its decision.

Furthermore, Agbakoba expressed his disappointment in lawyers who have taken to television to argue the merits and demerits of the Chicago State University matter, calling it unhelpful. He also called on media outlets to refrain from acting as quasi-judicial bodies and adjudicating the CSU matter in their coverage.

The legal luminary also made an appeal to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association on the need to address lawyers who breach ethical rules by turning the media into a courtroom.

He implored all citizens to desist from exacerbating tensions and anxieties in the country, advocating for a collective commitment to respecting the forthcoming judicial pronouncement from the Supreme Court, which will be binding on all parties.

The statement closes with a resounding call to end this “public nonsense.”
