Olivia Hussey, Beloved ‘Juliet’ Star Of Zeffirelli’s Romeo And Juliet, Dies At 73

Olivia Hussey, the actress who enchanted audiences as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, passed away on Friday at the age of 73.

Her family shared the news in a heartfelt Instagram statement, describing her as a “remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.”

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951, Hussey moved to London at age seven and trained at the Italia Conti drama school. At just 15, she became an international sensation when she starred opposite Leonard Whiting in Zeffirelli’s Oscar-winning adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Her portrayal of Juliet earned her a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year” and immortalized her in cinematic history.

Hussey’s career extended far beyond Romeo and Juliet. She appeared in the 1974 slasher classic Black Christmas, the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, and various other notable projects.

In 2023, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit against the studio behind Romeo and Juliet, alleging child abuse related to a controversial nude scene featuring the underage actors. Although the lawsuit was dismissed, Hussey defended the scene in a 2018 interview with Variety, explaining, “We both came from drama schools and took our work very seriously.”

Reflecting on their experience in 2023, Whiting praised Hussey for her courage and professionalism during filming, saying, “We really were very fond of each other and helped each other get through the whole thing.”

Hussey is survived by her husband, musician David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild. Her legacy as one of cinema’s most iconic Juliets will live on.
