#EndBadGovernance: “Only Criminal Elements Arrested, Not Minors – IGP

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has addressed rumors that the Nigerian Police Force detained minors during recent #EndBadGovernance protests. 

The IGP clarified that those apprehended were involved in criminal activities, including arson, property destruction, and looting, rather than being peaceful protesters or minors.

At a recent workshop on professionalism in criminal investigations in Abuja, Egbetokun thanked President Bola Tinubu for ordering the release of those wrongfully detained but reiterated, “No minors were arrested simply for protesting.”

He emphasized that the police ensured the right to peaceful protest while targeting only individuals involved in criminal acts.

Additionally, Egbetokun disclosed that officers found escorting 100 foreigners, including Chinese and Malaysian nationals detained on cybercrime suspicions in Abuja, had not been formally assigned to such duties.

These officers have been taken into custody and will face appropriate legal action.

The IGP warned that any officer compromising an investigation will face strict disciplinary measures, clarifying that those who detained suspects acted solely in response to criminal activities, not against peaceful protesters.
