The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has officially approved the Kogi State Government’s proposal to build an international airport in Zariagi, marking a significant milestone for the state’s infrastructure ambitions.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the approval in a letter from the Ministry dated October 9, 2024.
He emphasized that Governor Usman Ododo’s administration is committed to completing the project swiftly, adhering to all regulatory standards.

An airport in Kogi would not only serve the state but also benefit ten neighboring states, easing traffic on the Lokoja-Abuja road and reducing congestion at Abuja’s International Airport.
“This initiative is a top priority for the Ododo Administration, which seeks to establish Kogi State as a prominent aviation hub,” said Fanwo.
He highlighted the state’s strategic location at the heart of Nigeria, making it well-suited to tap into the aviation market. The project is expected to stimulate Kogi’s economy, create jobs, and showcase the state’s potential on an international level.
Governor Ododo has vowed to bring in industry experts to ensure the success of the airport. “Aviation is an industry that operates on trust and high standards, and we are dedicated to upholding these,” Fanwo added.

He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation for their support and approval of this historic project. A key focus of the airport will be its capacity to handle cargo, further enhancing Kogi’s economic landscape.
Fanwo reassured Kogi residents of the government’s commitment to impactful projects, building on the progress made over the last eight years.
Zariagi, already home to an existing airstrip, was chosen after the Ministry’s team found the site and state plans satisfactory.
