Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has called on residents to remain peaceful and refrain from resorting to violence following the outcome of the recent governorship election.
After the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner, Obaseki assured the people of Edo that justice will be sought through legal avenues.
In his statement, the governor acknowledged the widespread dissatisfaction with the electoral process, which he described as marred by “impunity and blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law.”
He recognized the frustration felt by many residents in the wake of the election results but stressed that violence is not the answer.
“Over the past few months, political parties have conducted rigorous campaigns to present their candidates for the governorship of Edo State, culminating in yesterday’s election,” Obaseki said.
“The beauty of democracy lies in the power it gives the people to choose their leaders. When this power is forcefully taken away, it is not just a tragedy but a violation of democratic principles.”
He expressed regret that the outcome of the September 21st governorship election has left many Edo people disheartened, feeling powerless against the institutions meant to protect them. “It is understandable that many people are saddened and aggrieved,” he added.
“In the face of this dismay, I urge all Edo citizens to remain calm and refrain from violence or the destruction of property, despite the provocation,” Obaseki continued. “Peace and justice will ultimately prevail, and this is my appeal to all the good people of Edo State who feel wronged at this time.”
The governor also encouraged those dissatisfied with the election results to pursue legal channels to challenge the outcome, reminding them that democracy provides mechanisms to address grievances.
Obaseki concluded by urging Edo residents to carry on with their lawful activities, assuring them that the government is committed to their safety and well-being.
