Fuel Prices Soar as Petrol Shortage Worsens

Nigerians are frustrated and angry about the ongoing fuel scarcity across the country. Long queues have formed at filling stations in many states, including Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, with prices reaching nearly N1,000/litre.

Marketers attribute the scarcity to limited supply from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), which has allegedly started rationing fuel to one truck per state. The situation has led to increased transport fares and waiting times for passengers.

NNPC has not commented on the issue, despite being the sole importer of petrol. Oil marketers and associations, such as IPMAN and PETROAN, have expressed concerns about the shortage and lack of communication from NNPC. They state that they can only distribute what NNPC provides, and there is currently no hope for improvement.

The scarcity has persisted since July 27, 2024, with no significant progress.

“We are still managing whatever we have… No hope of fuel scarcity yet. Whatever NNPC brings is what marketers will push out. There is a shortage in supply.” – Hammed Fashola, Vice National President of IPMAN.
