Senator Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, announced a monumental achievement on Monday during his address in Minna, Niger State.
He revealed that the federal government had sealed a significant deal worth €995 million with the Brazilian Government and the German Deutsch Bank Group. This funding is earmarked for the implementation of the Green Imperative Programme in Nigeria.
The cornerstone of this program is the establishment of mechanization hubs across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria, as outlined by the Minister. He further disclosed that a crucial memorandum of understanding had been inked between the Federal Government and John Deere Group, a subsidiary of Tata Equipment. This agreement entails the delivery of 10,000 units of tractors and implements in installments of 2,000 units annually over the next five years. Senator Kyari emphasized the Greener Hope Initiative, highlighting its pivotal role in reshaping the agricultural mechanization landscape in Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu echoed the government’s commitment to ensuring food sufficiency and bolstering local industries for sustainable economic growth during the Food Security and Agricultural Mechanization Programme in Niger State. He emphasized the deployment of cutting-edge agricultural machinery and technology to foster large-scale agro-value chain development in the state. President Tinubu underscored the importance of timely action, asserting that effective leadership hinges on addressing challenges promptly. He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential to become an economy of opportunities and emphasized the need to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, including ensuring food security for all students.
Amidst these efforts, Nigeria faces significant challenges in food inflation, which currently stands at 35.41%, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics. This surge in prices has led to a food crisis and nationwide protests by organized labor. In response to the pressing need, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has offered a generous donation of 25,000 tons of wheat from the Government of Ukraine to assist 1.3 million crisis-affected people in Nigeria.
