In a great effort to eliminate segmentation within the foreign exchange (FX) market and enhance consistency in terminology, the FMDQ Exchange recently announced a transition from the “Investors’ and Exporters’ (I&E) Window” to the “Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM).”
This decision follows the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent market notice, which introduced a substantial change in the nomenclature within the Nigerian FX market.
As part of this change, all mentions of the Investors’ and Exporters’ (I&E) FX Window will now be substituted with the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM). This realignment aligns with the CBN’s press release titled “Operational Changes to the Foreign Exchange Market,” released on June 14, 2023.
Furthermore, this change is intended to harmonize the formal FX market’s terminology with the provisions of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, which explicitly recognizes the Nigerian FX Market as the Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market.
Market analysts anticipate that this shift from the I&E FX Window to NAFEM signals a substantial transformation in the Nigerian FX landscape. It is expected to significantly influence how stakeholders in the FX market perceive and interact with this crucial aspect of Nigeria’s financial sector.
Notably, market participants, investors, exporters, and financial institutions will need to adjust to this new terminology as it becomes the standard reference for the FX market.
The CBN’s move to eliminate segmentation in the FX market represents a substantial policy shift aimed at unifying the terminology used to describe the FX market. This is anticipated to establish a more transparent and consistent environment for market participants.
The I&E window was initially created by the CBN on April 21, 2017, as the official platform for FX trading. In a recent market notice, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a significant change in the terminology used within the Nigerian Foreign Exchange (FX) market.
FMDQ Securities Exchange Limited (FMDQ Exchange), a prominent entity in the Nigerian financial market, has taken the initiative to revise and harmonize all existing references to the I&E FX Window throughout relevant systems and market documentation. This change will also apply to future reports and communications pertaining to the Nigerian FX market.
This development signifies the existence of only one unified market, NAFEM, suggesting the end of multiple windows. All stakeholders in the Nigerian FX market must be aware of this transition and update their internal systems and documentation accordingly. This change is expected to foster a better understanding of the FX market’s operations and regulations, creating a more transparent and consistent environment for all participants.
