The World Bank is poised to grant Nigeria’s loan request of $1.5 billion, as indicated by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun. The loan is sought by Nigeria to bolster foreign exchange (FX) liquidity within the nation, with the intention of securing it at a zero percent interest rate.
Nigeria’s national currency, the Naira, has been under significant pressure due to a shortage of foreign exchange supply in the system, leading to a weakening of the Naira to a low of N1,050 in the parallel market. Fearing that this situation might have dire consequences for the economy, the federal government is making a formal request to the World Bank for assistance.
Mr. Edun asserts that the loan, which will be accessed through the bank’s International Development Association (IDA), is deserving of approval. He mentioned that Nigeria has undertaken significant macroeconomic measures to make the tough decisions necessary for restoring balance to the economy and government finances, a move that has garnered support from multilateral development banks.
It is on these grounds that the World Bank is willing to consider and expedite the processing of $1.5 billion in concessional financing, which offers relatively affordable terms and can be disbursed promptly. Mr. Edun made these statements during a press briefing held after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.
Mr. Edun, a former Commissioner for Finance in Lagos, highlighted that the primary focus of the recent FEC meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, was the country’s prevailing economic situation. He informed State House Correspondents that Nigeria is also in the process of securing $80 million from the African Development Bank to fund the Ekiti Knowledge Zone (EKZ) project.
The EKZ project is designed to empower the youth by fostering the growth of a Knowledge Economy through technology and communications. It aims to support young individuals in harnessing technology for employment, training, and participation in the knowledge economy. This initiative aligns with the technological advancements that are increasingly shaping Nigeria’s economy.
