Amnesty International has called on the authorities of Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, to rescind the expulsion of a final-year nursing student and the suspension of 14 other 500-level students over a viral TikTok video.
The human rights organisation described the disciplinary measures as disproportionate, urging the university to prioritise dialogue and mediation in resolving the matter.
Amnesty International said imposing severe academic sanctions on the students could bring their academic progress to an abrupt end, stressing that the affected students have rights to freedom of expression, academic freedom and education.
According to the organisation, the expulsion and suspension could have a chilling effect on the exercise of these rights within the university community.
“The expulsion and suspension are disproportionate,” Amnesty International said, urging the university authorities to reconsider the sanctions and pursue a less punitive approach.
It further called on the institution to ensure that its policies and disciplinary procedures conform to international human rights standards.
The organisation stressed that the university has an obligation to uphold the rights of all members of its community, including their rights to freedom of expression, education and academic freedom.
Amnesty International urged the Madonna University authorities to resolve the issue through dialogue and mediation rather than measures that could jeopardise the affected students’ education and future careers.
