Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed disappointment after his side suffered a 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday, ending the Gunners’ perfect start to the Premier League season.
The defeat marked Arsenal’s first setback of the campaign as Brighton produced a commanding performance, exposing defensive weaknesses and capitalising on mistakes from Arteta’s team.
Brighton, who had secured a 3-2 victory over Manchester United earlier in the week, continued their impressive form with goals from Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andres.
Gross opened the scoring for the hosts after 30 minutes before Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage with a well-taken effort from the edge of the box.
Arsenal struggled to regain control after the break, and Brighton extended their lead when Andres headed home Gross’ cross from a set-piece situation.
Speaking after the match, Arteta acknowledged that Brighton deserved the victory, while criticising his players’ failure to meet the standards required in the Premier League.
“I am extremely disappointed. But first of all, we have to congratulate Brighton; they deserved it,” Arteta stated.
“They were the better team, and from our side, there were certain basics in football that you need to accomplish, especially in the Premier League, that we didn’t.”
The Arsenal manager said his team struggled in physical battles and made too many technical errors, which allowed Brighton to dictate the contest.
“In the first duel, winning the first ball, especially with how direct they were, they put us in a really difficult place,” he said.
Arteta added that mistakes while playing out from their own half made it difficult for Arsenal to control the game.
“In our own half, the amount of technical errors. We didn’t respect any principle of play that you have to get out of that man-to-man situation and that put us on the back foot, so it was very difficult to control the game.”
Despite the heavy defeat, Arteta said Arsenal had periods of dominance but failed to convert their opportunities.
“We had moments of dominance and control, and we opened them up; we didn’t take those chances with the quality that is required. It’s a big lesson for us,” he stated.
The defeat also raised concerns after Arsenal appeared frustrated during the closing stages of the match, with midfielder Declan Rice involved in a late confrontation with Brighton’s Malick Yalcouye at the final whistle.
The result gives Manchester City an opportunity to move clear at the top of the Premier League table if they avoid defeat against Sunderland on Sunday.
Arsenal will return to league action after the international break when they face Leeds United, with Arteta expected to demand a response from his players following the Brighton setback.
