Vice President Kashim Shettima has hailed the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem, describing the reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration as unprecedented and capable of laying the foundation for a secure digital economy.
Shettima gave the commendation on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), led by its Director-General, Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Vice President attributed the progress to sweeping reforms being implemented by the current NIMC leadership, particularly following the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, which he said has repositioned the Commission to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
According to him, the ongoing reorganisation of the Commission will facilitate the establishment of a sovereign Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), providing a secure digital backbone for governance and service delivery across the country.
“The ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem is unrivalled. The reforms being driven by the current management of NIMC, especially with the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, are laying the foundation for a sovereign Digital Public Infrastructure for Nigeria,” Shettima said.
He noted that the reforms would also accelerate the transition from paper-based public administration to a secure digital governance system anchored on robust trust architectures.
The Vice President praised the leadership of NIMC Director-General, Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote, saying her impact in repositioning the Commission from a database custodian to Nigeria’s foundational digital authority within a short period was exceptional.
“Your leadership and the transformation of NIMC from a database custodian to Nigeria’s foundational digital authority within such a short period are unprecedented, rare and worthy of commendation,” he stated.
Shettima urged the Commission’s management team to continue supporting the Director-General’s reform agenda and embrace more technology-driven solutions to accelerate the delivery of key priorities under the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The meeting underscored the Federal Government’s determination to strengthen Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure as a critical enabler of inclusive governance, improved public service delivery and economic development.
