Obi, I Signed Four-Year Presidency Agreement — Kwankwaso

The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, says he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have signed a written agreement committing Obi to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027.

Kwankwaso disclosed that he had no reason to doubt Obi’s repeated pledge to leave office after a single term.

“I personally believe him, and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will renege. I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes,” he said.

Kwankwaso explained that the arrangement goes beyond a verbal understanding, revealing that both leaders documented the agreement.

“We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to even put it on paper. We have done one agreement for the party, and we have done another one for us,” he said.

According to him, the pact provides that power should return to northern Nigeria after Obi’s proposed four-year administration.

“The agreement is that after four years we will come together as a party, friends and brothers, involve everybody and work together so that after his term, from 2027 to 2031, power returns to the North,” Kwankwaso stated.

Obi has consistently maintained that a single term would be enough to implement his reform agenda, insisting he does not need eight years in office to tackle Nigeria’s challenges. The latest disclosure by Kwankwaso offers fresh insight into the power-sharing arrangement within the NDC ahead of the 2027 general election.
