- NEC Unveils Reconciliation Committee, Orders Full Disclosure Of Campaign Funds
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved to tighten internal discipline and strengthen its institutional framework, declaring that all governments elected on its platform must submit major policies, programmes and appointments to the party structure for consultation.
The resolutions were part of decisions reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
In what appears to be a bold push to entrench party supremacy, the NDC insisted that personal interests and ambitions must take a back seat to the collective goals of the party.
“The NDC is committed to building the party as a strong and enduring institution, with emphasis on party supremacy,” the statement said.
It added that “the programmes, policies, and appointments (except personal staff) of all governments elected on the platform of the party must be made in consultation with the party structure.”
According to the party, members are expected to align their individual agendas with the overall objectives of the organisation, stressing that the party remains supreme at all times.
Party Moves Against Parallel Structures
In another far-reaching decision, the NDC directed all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations linked to the party to operate strictly under its supervision.
The party warned that no affiliated organisation would be allowed to function independently or create parallel structures capable of undermining the authority of the party leadership.
“All affiliated groups and NGOs shall operate under the guidance and control of the party and must not function in parallel with, or independently of, the party structure,” the statement declared.
Code of Conduct for Officials, Candidates
As part of efforts to strengthen accountability and discipline, the NEC approved the establishment of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for party officials and candidates.
The party disclosed that a committee headed by the National Legal Adviser has already been constituted to develop the framework and operational guidelines.
Party leaders said the move is aimed at promoting ethical conduct, transparency and responsible leadership across all levels of the organisation.
Reconciliation Committee Inaugurated
Seeking to heal internal divisions and consolidate its ranks ahead of future political contests, the NDC also announced the inauguration of a National Reconciliation Committee.
The committee has been tasked with reaching out to aggrieved members and resolving disputes within the party.
“The National Reconciliation Committee has been inaugurated to reconcile all aggrieved members of the party,” the statement noted.
‘NDC Is Not a Personality Cult’
The party further emphasized that it was being built as a lasting institution rather than a vehicle for any individual political ambition.
“The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded,” the statement said.
The party urged members to remain loyal and committed to its long-term growth, stressing that allegiance must always be to the party and the national interest rather than to any individual aspirant or candidate.
Tough Rules on Campaign Funding
In one of its strongest resolutions, the NDC announced stringent accountability measures for party finances and campaign funding.
The NEC directed that all party officers must ensure strict transparency in the management of party resources, while candidates seeking elective positions would be required to fully disclose funds raised and contributions made to their campaigns.
According to the party, all campaign funds must pass through designated party accounts at the local government, state, zonal and national levels.
“There must be strict accountability for all funding received,” the statement said, adding that monies sourced by candidates and contributions made to campaign accounts “must be fully disclosed to the party.”
The NDC said dedicated campaign accounts would be maintained for elections, including presidential and governorship contests, as part of efforts to promote financial integrity and public confidence in the party’s operations.
Political observers say the sweeping reforms signal the party’s determination to strengthen its internal structures, curb indiscipline and position itself as a more organised political force ahead of future electoral battles.
