US Military Support: DHQ Speaks Out

  • Says Nigeria’s Sovereignty Remains Intact

Nigeria’s defence establishment has moved to reassure citizens that its military collaboration with the United States is a capacity-building partnership rather than an infringement on national sovereignty.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) emphasised that the cooperation is strictly advisory and training-based, designed to enhance the skills of Nigerian troops and improve counter-terrorism operations. Officials stressed that the arrangement does not impose any financial obligations on the Federal Government and remains focused on operational effectiveness.

The clarification followed public interest in the arrival of approximately 100 U.S. military personnel and equipment on February 17, a deployment linked to prior security discussions between Nigerian and American defence officials.

Meanwhile, military authorities have described the presence of the foreign trainers as part of routine military-to-military engagement—an approach commonly adopted by nations confronting shared security threats.

At a press briefing in Abuja, defence media officials highlighted that the partnership is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture rather than substituting domestic efforts.

They noted that international cooperation in counter-terrorism is a standard practice among nations seeking to address evolving security challenges.

“Our sovereignty is intact. Our territorial integrity is intact. Nobody is giving away our sovereignty.

“There is no basis for concern. We go for training abroad all the time. This is simply a training programme,” he said.

According to the DHQ, the training initiatives are expected to bolster the operational capacity of Nigerian forces, enabling more effective responses to insurgency and other security threats.

Officials maintained that such collaborations do not compromise national independence but instead support the broader objective of safeguarding citizens.

The assurance comes amid ongoing public debate about foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s security operations. Defence authorities reiterated that all engagements with international partners remain under Nigerian oversight and are structured to reinforce not replace, local security strategies.

As security challenges persist, officials argue that strategic partnerships can complement domestic efforts, providing technical expertise and operational support while preserving national control over military operations.

The DHQ’s position underscores the delicate balance between international cooperation and sovereignty in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

Ultimately, defence leaders insist that the collaboration reflects a pragmatic approach to security, one that prioritises results while maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s military institutions and governance.
