Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte is facing renewed political pressure after members of the clergy filed a third impeachment complaint against her within just over a week.
The latest petition, submitted on Monday, accuses Duterte of misappropriating at least $10 million in public funds during her tenure as vice president and former education secretary. The complainants said the move was driven by moral concerns rather than political motives.
“We believe there is a moral issue that must be addressed,” said Reverend Joselito Sarabia, one of the petitioners.
Under the country’s constitution, a successful impeachment would lead to a Senate trial and could bar Duterte from holding public office, potentially ending her 2028 presidential ambitions.
The complaint also references an alleged death threat against President Ferdinand Marcos, which Duterte has previously said was misunderstood.
Representative Leila de Lima, who endorsed the filing, expressed confidence that the case would progress, describing it as a strengthened version of previous impeachment articles.
This latest development follows two earlier complaints and comes amid an ongoing political rift between President Marcos and the Duterte family, former allies who won the 2022 election together.
Supporters of the vice president have accused Marcos of orchestrating the arrest and transfer of her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, to the International Criminal Court.
